The Feelies 1968-1969
I don't know much about the Seattle-based Feelies, but they seem to have been Gordon Kjellberg's next project after his time spent with Merrilee and the Turnabouts. According to Kjellberg, The Feelies put out three 45 RPM records, all on the Jerden label. Two of these are Happy c/w Look at Me and Louie, Louie c/w Warm Woman. I do not know which songs were on the third single.
According to pnwbands.com, Kjellberg was the group's guitarist, Wild Bill Hornibrook was the keyboardist, and two different bassists and three different drummers were with the group at some time. Rick Fondell and Rick Bullard are recognized at Feelies bassists, while drummers include "Shuga" George Clark, Vern Palm, and George "Shakey Roe" O'Brien. Drummer Bob Holden, formerly of Don & the Goodtimes has also been cited as a member at one time.
Clark and Kjellberg both played with Merrilee and the Turnabouts previous to the formation of The Feelies. After The Feelies, Kjellberg, Holden, Bullard, and Hornibrook played in the cover group Cherry Fizz with Andy Parypa of The Sonics. Both Kjellberg and Hornibrook later played in Blue Mountain Eagle along with Kjellberg's brother, Vern.
While sometimes reminiscent of The Liberty Party, The Feelies' music has a unique sound. Their songs range from fast-tempo pop to eerie, slow dirges. I have provided the most complete set of lyrics as possible, but with two of their songs unknown, I will update as I learn more.

Lyrics
Happy (G. Kjellberg)
Everybody needs a little song To keep their day from goin’ wrong, yeah Smile on your face and come closer and see That you could make me happy, yeah, oh Wasn’t too many years ago I had really nothin’ to show, yeah You smiled really big than you came my way Then you made me happy, yeah, oh no You made me Happy days are here to stay Everything seems to be goin’ my way, yeah Keep on smilin’ so you can see That you made me happy, yeah, oh no You made me Happy Baby, you made me Happy Yeah, you made me Happy Oh, you made me so Happy Yeah, you made me |
Look At Me (G. Kjellberg)
Well, I’ve been often wondering What life is all about The thrills and chills and old spills Like fire they all burn out And the roads they lead to nowhere As if your sight is blind And I can’t cast a shadow Where even I can find And the trees they fade now to me Their leaves are broke and torn And the wind’s dream pleas for mercy So rapture can be born Look at me Help the man who wonders A beggar or thief should last Or turn up the raging river To help him from his past Cry out your every blessing If someone nears to you To lift you from destruction And open the world to you You’re free and see the beauty Thank the heavens you've reached your goal Endless states of splendor A body who’s found its soul Look at me Look at me Oh baby, yeah I say now Look at me Won’t you look at me, baby? Yeah, said look at me Oh now, now baby, baby now yeah Look at me Oh, I feel much, much better, baby yeah Look at me Yeah, hey, yeah |
Louie, Louie (R. Berry)
Louie, Louie me gotta go Louie, Louie me gotta go Three nights and days I sail the sea Me think of girl constantly Upon the ship I see her there I smell the roses in her hair Louie, Louie me gotta go Louie, Louie me gotta go Me see Jamaica, the moon above It won’t be long ‘till I see me love I’ll take her in my arms and then I’ll tell her I’ll never leave again Louie, Louie me gotta go Louie, Louie me gotta go Louie, Louie me gotta go Louie, Louie me gotta go Louie x43 |
Warm Woman (G. Kjellberg)
Well, there’s a special kind of woman That all men should find Her eyes are warm and her lips are soft She’s just your special kind She’s bound to make you feel happy She’ll give you anything It’s good to have her close She will make you sing Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman So long She makes you feel so good She’ll fill your heart with desire And when she comes up to you She’ll light your soul on fire ‘You’ve got to treat her alright ‘Cause she is always true Don’t ever let her down She’s got a hold on you Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Go on Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman Warm woman |
